Greensboro College leads North Carolina in adding women’s wrestling

Greensboro, NC—Interim Athletic Director Robin Daniel announced Friday morning that Greensboro College would add women’s wrestling this coming fall semester.

The NCAA Div. III program is North Carolina’s first option for students to stay in-state with access to the combination of further education and wrestling in college.

Head men’s wrestling coach Kevin Birmingham will add to his role and lead the start-up women’s program. “This is a great opportunity for young women wrestlers, especially in the state of North Carolina,” said Birmingham. “The sport is really taking off at the high-school level, and where are those women going? I want them to come to Greensboro College.”

North Carolina’s very own Breonnah Neal is the head coach at Ferrum College in Virginia after a decorated college career, bringing home a national title for King University. Neal said she thinks this add will help grow the number of girls that start wrestling at a young age. “I’m excited to see how the state grows from here. They had great numbers in their NC women’s invitational state championship at the high school level this year.”

As an NCAA member institution, Greensboro moves women’s wrestling another notch closer to the 40-program requirement for NCAA championship status.
