Hildebrandt and Gomez Collect Wins at WRTC Underground 1
Alexis Gomez and Sarah Hildebrandt came out the victors in their matches at the Wisconsin RTC Underground 1 event.
In bout 3, Santiago Ayala grabbed a push-out point in a flurry on the edge. But as they engaged back in the center of the mat Gomez bested her opponent from the over-under position and secured the first-period fall. Gomez, a redshirt freshman at Grand View University remains undefeated this fall. She won the UWW Junior National tournament in Omaha earlier this month.
The co-main event was a battle between World medalists Sarah Hildebrandt and Alyssa Lampe. It was noted in the commentary that the two had never wrestled prior to this evening, either in a match or training situation. This bout was highly anticipated since Lampe made her comeback last December—winning the 2019 Senior Nationals event—and Hildebrandt announced that she’d arrived at her weight class (50 kg) in January. Hildebrandt won Gold at the Matteo Pellicone in Rome and qualified the 50 kg weight class for the Olympics back in March.
In the Underground match, the World medalists vyed for control in the handfight and front headlock positions. Lampe was able to earn a push-out point after defending an attack from Hildebrandt, but after she “got her wrestling going,” Hildebrandt quickly added up the points. Hildebrandt’s points included +2 from her very own slick throw by from the front headlock position, and she was able to finish the match in par terre.
During the post-match interview, Hildebrandt said, “ . . . I had to find my own [wrestling] and not force anything . . . I was really excited that she agreed to this.” She noted that it was great to wrestle such a high-level match.
