Mike McCoy says Southwestern College will compete in 2020

WINFIELD, K.S. – – The women’s wrestling program at Southwestern College kind of slipped off the radar last year. Following the buzz of the announcement to add the sport in November of 2017, the programs first year was virtually inexistent.

Sarah Doty, nee Bollinger, was selected as head coach with waves of excitement. However, she only had the summer months to recruit and was expected to produce a competition ready roster for the fall. The Builders competed in two events in 2018, and, with only three women on the roster, Southwestern wrapped up their season early. Sarah resigned in March of 2019 after a decision to move back to the Saint Louis area where she is now doing great things as the head women’s coach at Edwardsville Wrestling Club.

We talked with Southwestern’s Athletic Director Mike McCoy to check in on the status of the program’s development. After careful consideration, the department decided to dive back into the building phase for a season. A national search for a head coach is ongoing, and once a selection has been made the year will be devoted to recruiting. McCoy said the women’s wrestling program should be geared up and ready to compete in the fall of 2020.

Southwestern College is one of five Kansas schools offering women’s wrestling. Fellow programs include Baker University, Central Christian College, Ottawa University and the University of Saint Mary. Kansas sanctioned girls wrestling this year as participation rates continue to increase across the country.
