The National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) has released a complete list of 2018-19 Champions of Character Five-Star Institutions. On that list were twenty-five NAIA member schools with women’s wrestling programs.

The five core values of a Champions of Character program are integrity, respect, responsibility, sportsmanship and servant leadership.

To become a Five-Star Institution of any level, member schools must meet or exceed 60% on a 100% scorecard system. Points are awarded for character training (up to 67%), academic focus (up to 8%), character recognition (up to 17%) and character promotion (up to 8%).

The NAIA’s vision of the Champions of Character program is to change the culture of sport. Its mission is, “To provide training to instill the values that build character so students, coaches and parents know, do and value the right thing on and off the field. Research shows that the longer a student spends in sports, their social reasoning – sacrificing for the good of the team – rises.”
