NWCA Tournament Team Rankings (3.3)
1. Simon Fraser 2. McKendree 3. King 4. Colorado Mesa 4. Emmanuel
130 Pounds
Rankings: 1. Nicole Depa (Simon Fraser) 2. Allison Petix (King) 3. Amanda Martinez (North Central)
Predictions: . Nicole Depa (Simon Fraser) 2. Allison Petix (King) 3. Gabby Skidmore (Augsburg)
#1 Nicole Depa (Simon Fraser) is down from 136 pounds where she won the Bearcat Open and Menlo College Open. Allison Petix (#2) is a junior at King University. She dominated the 130-pound bracket at MoVal after hopping off a flight from the Bill Farrell International. Petix recently finished runner-up at the Bearcat Open, where she lost to now #2 at 136 pounds, Lauren Mason. Petix was 5th at the 2019 WCWAs and 7th in 2018.
#3 Amanda Martinez is a junior at the first-year program North Central College. She placed 2nd at the Bearcat Open to now 136 pound #2 Lauren Mason, won the NCC Invite and placed 3rd at MoVal–losing only to Petix.
Augsburg freshman Gabby Skidmore lost matches to Petix (9-0) and Martinez (3-1) at MoVal, but she’s not one to put off the radar.
136 Pounds
Rankings: 1.Emma Bruntil (McKendree) 2. Lauren Mason (Simon Fraser) 3. Dalia Garibay (Colorado Mesa)
Predictions: 1. Emma Bruntil (McKendree) 2. Lauren Mason (Simon Fraser) 3. Dalia Garibay (Colorado Mesa)
This is going to be an incredibly exciting weight to watch, and with the top two ranked from McKendree and Simon Fraser . . .
#1 Emma Bruntil is a McKendree freshman and has put together performance after performance. She was the 2019 Senior Nationals champion. Bruntil’s only loss was an upset from Colorado Mesa’s Dalia Garibay (ranked #3) at a home dual. Garibay got revenge after losing to Bruntil by tech fall at National Duals. Garibay won the match 8-6.
#2 Lauren Mason is a junior at Simon Fraser. She’s been at 130 all season, but wrestled 62kg (136) at Senior Nationals. Lauren placed 3rd in in the 2019 WCWAs and 8th in 2018. Mason won by tech over Garibay (13-2) at Senior Nationals. I’m not ready to count any of these three out for the top spot.
143 Pounds
Rankings: 1. Ana Godinez-Gonzalez 2. Ashlynn Ortega 3. Alara Boyd
Predictions 1. Ana Godinez-Gonzalez 2. Ashlynn Ortega 3. Alara Boyd
#1 ranked Ana Godinez-Gonzalez is a transfer to Simon Fraser from the University of Fraser Valley. She’s ranked #1 for a reason: Godinez-Gonzalez beat both Ortega and Boyd by tech fall at National Duals.
#2 Ashlynn Ortega placed 3rd at Senior Nationals and qualified for the Olympic Team Trials—taking a loss only to Forrest Mollinari. In November, Ortega won the SFU Open finals vs Olympian Michelle Fazzari (CAN). King’s Ortega placed 3rd at the WCWAs as a freshman in 2019. #3 Alra Boyd is a freshman at McKendree. She recently won the Bearcat Open and placed 3rd at MoVal. Boyd’s a 2019 Fargo champ for Team Indiana, and 2019 junior world team member.
155 Pounds
Rankings: 1. Alyvia Fiske (Simon Fraser) 2. Alex Glaude (McKendree) 3. Joye Levendusky (McKendree)
Predictions: 1. Alex Glaude (McKendree) 2. Alyvia Fiske (Simon Fraser) 3. Jayden Laurent (Lakeland)
I could say this over and over for different weights . . . there are going to be exciting matches here!
#1 Alyvia Fiske (Simon Fraser), #2 Alex Glaude (McKendree) and #4 Jayden Laurent (Lakeland) are all Senior National Team members. Fiske placed 3rd at the 2019 WCWAs. Alex has been all over the place this season, jumping between college and senior level competition. She was one of five women that wrestled in Tokyo at the Olympic Test Event, won the SFU Open, placed 3rd at the Bill Farrell International, placed 4th at Senior Nationals and just recently won the Bearcat Open. Glaude is a 2019 WCWA National Champion.
#3 Joye Levendusky (McKendree) placed 3rd at MoVal, and 7th at the 2019 WCWAs. Jayden Laurent is back on the college scene this semester at Lakeland University. She just finished runner-up to OCU’s Rachel Watters at the 2020 WCWAs – – Laurent is a 2019 WCWA National Champ.
