North Central secures first dual victory early in program history
The women wrestlers at North Central College secured their first dual win in program history Tuesday night. And, to make it more exciting, they did it in front of a home crowd in Naperville, IL, where the Cardinals outscored the MacMurray Highlanders 27-21.
The Cardinals are led by Head Coach Joe Norton, Head Assistant Coach Zach Cook and Graduate Assistant Brittany Marshall.
“We knew going in that we would have to wrestle with the mindset of looking to dominate our opponent in every match in order to win the dual meet after giving up three forfeits,” said Coach Norton. “Our women really did that tonight. They were aggressive and their attacks were sharp.”
The North Central College women’s wrestling program is brand new to the mats in 2019.
This is the third competition for the team, and they had strong showings over the last two weekends. The Cardinals brought home four champs: Amanda Martinez (jr-130) and Yelena Makoyed (fr-170) at the Dr. Bob Kellogg Open, and Asia Nguyen-Smith (fr-130) and Yelena Makoyed (fr-170) at the Adrian Open.
Fans can get a sense of the programs energy via social media. Coach Norton said, “It was great to win our first ever dual meet in front of a great home crowd!”
MacMurray’s Jezebel Pardo was the only Highlander to come away with a win during the evenings official matches, securing a pin, and sealing the final score at 27-21.
