The Lady Knights remain undefeated after a 28-21 victory over Adrian

ERIE, P.A. – – The Lady Knights and the Bulldogs exchanged individual victories this afternoon, keeping a relatively tight team score through the end of the dual. Gannon secured six of the ten match victories, edging out Adrian with a 28-21 victory, and bringing their dual record up to an undefeated 3-0.

“We are just making little adjustments here and there each day,” said Coach Dierken. “Week to week the girls are buying in more and more to our system and focusing on the right things. We are giving a little more each time and opening up more. Continual improvement is always the goal, and the wins are just a byproduct.”

Every match wrestled ended in a fall or tech.

Gannon set the tone early, picking up back-to-back technical falls from Nikoly Dos Santos (fr-109) and Caleeann Blarr (so-116). “Nikoly and Caleeann are coming out poised and strong consistently,” said Coach Dierken.

Mikayla Dockweiler (so-130) and Annabelle Helm (fr-155) both racked up team points with technical falls, but Amara Devericks (fr-170) picked up a fall in just 18 seconds, officially sealing the team result in favor of the Lady Knights.

Adrian kept themselves in the fight with four dominant wins. Brittney Wolgast (fr-123) secured the Bulldogs first victory by fall over Gannon’s Alexandra Alers in the second period. Megan Vondrasek (fr-143) and Lacey Jung-Michonski (so-191) added falls of their own, while teammate Zoe Nowicki (so-136) picked up another tech.

“Obviously we didn’t get the team result we were looking for,” said Coach Cushard. “Not having our 101 in the lineup really hurt us with the five points. Beyond that, we had some freshman jitters that didn’t go the way we wanted them to. It was close in a lot of cases where if it would have just worked out slightly differently it would have come out in our favor—it didn’t in this case, and that’s the way it works sometimes.”

Gannon will see Adrian again next weekend—this time around with Adrian hosting the Bulldog Open on October 26th. The Bulldog Open is the first individual tournament of the 2019-20 season.

“Shifting from a dual to an open is usually easier than the other way around. For us it should be even easier now that we got the first match out of the way, said Coach Cushard. “We’re certainly looking forward to next Saturday at home.”
