WCWA Championship finals will feature freshman standouts and national team members
The second day of the WCWA National Championships began this morning similar to how it finished yesterday: with Campbellsville asserting their dominance over the rest of the field. They will enter the final session tonight with twice as many points as the second place team.
Campbellsville has 204.5 team points with 13 All-Americans, including 8 championship finalists. Jamestown is in a distant second place with 102.5 points. Next is Life with 85 team points followed by Presbyterian (79.5) and Oklahoma City (71) to round out the top 5. Augsburg sits in 6th place with 3 finalists. Tiffin is in 7th and Umpqua is in 8th place. Midland and Eastern Oregon are 9th and 10th, respectively.
Returning WCWA National Champions Abigail Nette (Campbellsville) and Jayden Laurent (Lakeland) remain undefeated and will compete for their second straight title. Nette will face Gabby Skidmore from Augsburg at 130 pounds while Laurent will take on Rachel Watters (Oklahoma City) at 155 pounds.
170 pounds will feature two Campbellsville wrestlers. Kenya-Lee Sloan was the top seed and teammate Mariah Harris was the second seed. Both scored 10-0 technical falls in the quarter-finals last night and went the distance in convincing fashion this morning. Sloan was 17-6 victor over Jade Piper from UmquaCC. Harris defeated Jordan Nelson from Life, 9-3.
At 191 pounds, Agatha Andrews from Jamestown took down top seeded Nkechinyere Nwankwo (Oklahoma City) in a close 5-4 bout. She’s the loan Jimmies wrestler in the championship finals and will face number two seed Alexander Castillo from Campbellsville.
The championship finals will begin at 6:00 PM EST.
